Traditional 2D animation
Traditional 2D methods of animation have been around for the last few centuries and involves many of the foundation techniques for animation.

Flick book - Flick books involve drawing/painting a picture on one page then on the next page making it similar but with a slight change to the image and so on until there are enough images for it to seem animated when the pages are flicked at high speed.

Rotoscoping - Is an animation technique where animators would take live action footage, trace over it frame by frame and then be used in an animated film, this then gives an easy and fairly realistic look to the animation as it has live action footage behind it. A slightly older method was to project it on to a screen and redraw over it to make it into animated footage.
Digital 2D animation
Digital animation has only really come to life within the past 30 years as the computer age started to develop. This brought about the use of vectors, bitmaps and computer software.

Stopmotion - Stop motion is the process of taking multiple images or single frames with a camera of a object and moving the object slightly each frame to create the illusion of the object moving. This process can take a long time to create a couple of seconds of footage due to how many images need to be taken. Stop motion has been around for a very long time and has been used in many films to create either short visual effects or full length films.
2D Bitmaps - 2D bitmaps are digital 2D images rendered by a computer which can be used to create digital 2D animations. There are many other types of image formats that CGI animations can be used in for example jpeg sequences or PNG sequences.

Animation software - is digital software for animating on a computer such as programs like Adobe After Effects which can create both 2D and 3D animation along with programs like 3DS Max which can create a CGI product in either 2D or 3D. In most animation software programs, key frames will be the main process to animating a piece.
